Description

An object composed of seven transparent glass panes stacked vertically and mounted on a white rectangular fibreboard pedestal. Each pane bears one of the letters forming the preposition między (“between”), cut from black foil and affixed to the surface; when viewed from the front, the arrangement of the panes creates the illusion that the word is written on a single plane. This visualisation of the concept of “between” employs a tautological strategy frequently used by Dróżdż (“between” located between the panes) to suggest a spatial expansion of the term’s meanings.

This is the third and final conceptual version of between. The two earlier ones are: 1967 – a text in five lines, in which the word między is inserted into the middle of a line already containing that word repeated several times; 1977 – a spatial plane version, in which the word między is distributed across the walls, ceiling, and floor of the gallery.
