Untitled (digits)
The work consists of two square boards containing the digits 1 to 9 arranged in threes and written twice on each board, with 0 placed in the centre, linking the sets of numbers, each of which ends with an ellipsis suggesting continuation. The sets are arranged diagonally and rotated by 180 degrees; on the first board they occupy the second and fourth quarters and are written horizontally, while on the second they occupy the first and third quarters and are written vertically. The visual structure evokes both the Cartesian coordinate system, so central to Dróżdż’s thinking, and the dial of a clock with hands rotating around an axis, here represented by zero. The work may thus be seen as a further reflection on the relation between cyclical and linear time, previously explored in Energy Exchanges (2000). It has been produced as a digital print on paper mounted on a rigid support.
