Untitled (together separately)

A work executed – exceptionally – in a font imitating handwriting, composed of the two eponymous words written twice on the board. In one version, the letters within each word are written “together” (connected); in the other, they are written “separately” – with spaces between letters. It thus refers to handwritten text, in which the letters within words may either be written without lifting the hand or deliberately spaced out in order to draw attention to a particular word. The work stages both tautology and semantic opposition: the word “together” appears once written together and once separately, and likewise for “separately.” It is another metalinguistic reflection on the relationship between meaning and visual spelling. The work has been executed as a digital print on a rigid substrate.
