Description

A diptych containing two different spatial arrangements of the letters forming the word ja (“I”). On the first board, a single letter “a” is surrounded by regularly spaced letters “j”; on the second, the letter “j” occupies the centre and is surrounded by letters “a.” This metalinguistic work focuses on meanings embedded within the linguistic system. It raises the question whether a spatially arranged two-letter word is instinctively read from the centre or from the multiplied periphery. In each case, the word ja appears once, and aj once. The concept may be interpreted both as a reflection on the notion of the “I” and on the relation between the human “I” and its surroundings (other people). The work has been executed as a digital print on a rigid substrate.
