Untitled (commas, zeros)
The work consists of three square boards containing, respectively, only commas, only zeros, and zeros separated by commas. It continues the idea developed in Continuum (1973). Whereas in that work a single comma inserted among zeros conferred semantic meaning upon a purely visual pattern, here the repeated placement of a comma after each zero produces no meaning. The concept prompts reflection on the role of convention, which, by establishing fixed rules, creates linguistic systems, whether verbal or mathematical. In his concept-shapes, Dróżdż removes elements from their original system and places them in a new context, thereby paradoxically revealing the significance of the system itself. The work has been executed as a digital print on paper mounted on a rigid support.
