Untitled (beyond)
A series of six square boards on which the word poza (“beyond”) and the outline of a square (“frame”) are arranged in various positions. On the first board, the word appears in the centre of a slightly rotated square; in subsequent boards it moves towards the lower right corner, outside the perimeter, and finally disappears. The sequence is based on an imagined framing procedure in which the inscription and the drawn square are situated either within the frame or beyond it. The last board is entirely blank, a white surface. The work is closely related to Dróżdż’s original concept of concept-shapes, involving the “framing” of text (the cutting of the edges of the page or panel), which suggests an invisible continuation of the text beyond the frame. The final empty board indicates that what is essential may occur beyond the limits of perception. The work has been presented as boards with handwritten text and drawings on Bristol board and as digital prints on paper mounted on a rigid support.
