Untitled (between)
Stanisław Dróżdż’s first spatial work, created at the Foksal Gallery in Warsaw. The theme of this concept recurs throughout his oeuvre, from traditional linguistic poems to the spatial work between executed as a glass object. The 1977 presentation transferred the textual principle of the sheet or board onto all the walls, the floor and the ceiling of the gallery space. The word między (“between”) is broken down into individual letters arranged according to the author’s system on all these surfaces, so that the multiplied word entirely fills the space. The idea of between relates to the earlier letters – it visualises the cognitive ability to read text dispersed in space. The construction of the work was based on the exact dimensions of the Foksal Gallery, and all subsequent versions in other venues had to respect this principle, which required the construction of a special internal structure (the work cannot simply be scaled, as the size of the letters must remain constant). between is one of Dróżdż’s most recognised works, and later versions are held in the permanent collections of museums and galleries in Poland and abroad (including Berlin and Rome). The materials used include plasterboard and MDF boards.
