Situation (basic variant) [brackets]
One of Dróżdż’s works employing the smallest elements of writing, namely punctuation marks. In other works (e.g. uncertainty, hesitation, certainty) he used full stops, commas, question marks and exclamation marks. Here, parentheses are treated as isolated signs, deprived of the textual context in which they normally function. In the author’s concept, the edge of the sheet or board on which the parentheses are placed becomes significant, cutting across the interior of the field enclosed by them. The following variants of parentheses usage with a (non-existent) text are presented: parentheses opened and closed in the next line; opened and closed in the same line; the closing of a parenthesis without a prior opening together with the opening of a new parenthesis without closing; in the following line, the closing of a parenthesis without opening it; and in the final line, the opening of a parenthesis without closing it. All possible variants of parentheses usage are employed here on the basis of mathematical combination. The concept prompts reflection on the main text and digression, indicating all the possible relations between them. The work has been presented as handwritten signs on paper, as an enlarged photographic print and as a handwritten board with black signs on a white background.
