Description

The word “MINIMUM”, written in capital letters, is repeated in six lines and gradually transforms into the word “MAXIMUM”. In the following lines, the final letters of the word are detached, forming a second column of letters after a gap. In the penultimate line, the letter “N” is replaced by “X”, and in the last line, the letter “I” is replaced by “A”. The work points to the contrast between the meaning of a concept and the word that names it (signifié and signifiant in semiology). It has been presented both as black letters on a white background and as white letters on a black background, in many versions: typescript on paper, exhibition board with text handwritten in ink on Bristol board and fibreboard, prints on paper, foil and aluminium (Dibond), and as a mural on the exterior wall of a building (Wrocław, 2016 – the original version of the work, with curved letters, was displayed).
