Description

A work employing the language of mathematics. It begins with the date 15.05.1939 – Stanisław Dróżdż’s date of birth – followed by a continuous sequence of random digits, ending in each variant of the work with the digit “8” cut in half by the edge of the sheet or board. The date written in this manner contains from eleven to eighteen digits denoting the year, which approaches or exceeds the scientifically accepted age of the Universe (c. 14 billion years). The fascination with large numbers that surpass human imagination yet can be easily inscribed in mathematical language is a recurring motif in Dróżdż’s oeuvre, related to the concepts of space and time in relation to human existence, as in Continuum. The work has been executed as numbers cut from foil and mounted on Plexiglas and directly on the wall.
