Description

The work consists of dense lines of zeros filling the entire surface to its edges, which cut the extreme lines of zeros. In the centre, a comma divides the middle line into two parts. This is another work based on mathematical symbols. Its principle is to emphasise the importance of a minor element within the linguistic system, whose presence or absence radically alters meaning – as in works such as Optimum, micro – macro or przy/e/szłość. In Continuum, the single comma determines that instead of a decorative pattern of zeros we are confronted with a vast decimal fraction whose digits before and after the comma remain unknown. The fascination with large numbers that exceed human imagination yet can be easily written in mathematical language recurs in Dróżdż’s work, often in connection with the concepts of space and time and human existence. The work has been presented as a typescript, as a board handwritten with emulsion on Bristol board and primed fibreboard, and as a digital print on paper mounted on a rigid support.
